Get Fit Friday - Vacation

Loss this week: 1 lb
Total loss: 4 lbs

That word strikes fear in the heart of anyone trying to lose weight, right?  Last week, we went on vacation to visit family.  I was worried before we left, because I had really started to get some momentum going with my weight loss, and I didn't want to lose that.  I did end up gaining about 2 pounds, but it could have been worse, so I was happy with it.  Here was my plan for the week:

  • Exercise - We were staying with family, so that made it a little harder to exercise than if we had been in a hotel with a fitness center.  I was able to go out three mornings and walk.  I also tried to do a lot of walking during the day.
  • Eating out - Thankfully, we didn't do too much.  We did order pizza one night instead of going to a baseball game.  I had two pieces.  :-(  Should have eaten more salad.
  • Portion Control - This was the one thing I had control over.  I knew I had to be careful, and I tried to be.
We had some really great food.  We were in Amish country in Indiana, and Amish food is the best.  (I think it's all the butter.)  Monday, we had corn chowder.  Between the bacon, cream, and butter, it was delicious.  Wednesday, we had Amish donuts.  Butter and powdered sugar.  Need I say more?  I only had half.  That right there was a HUGE sacrifice.  What I really tried to do was drink lots of water and load up on fruits and veggies.

So what to do if you're going on vacation?  Definitely plan to exercise.  Have that plan in your head before you go, even down to scheduling it if you need to.  If you don't plan it, it won't happen.  If you are the one planning and cooking meals, then it will be much easier to stick to a plan.  If you're with family, then portion control will be your friend.  :-)

All in all, it was a good week.  This week, I got back to exercising and tracking my food.  Like I said, I had gotten some momentum going, and I want to keep it up!  Hoping for a total of 10 pounds by the end of the month!

July Currently!

We went home for vacation last week!  While I love going on vacation and visiting family, it's nice to be home back in our own surroundings.  Am I the only one who spends a vacation worrying about how my kids are acting at other people's houses?  They did great, but it always stresses me out!

Now that we're home, it's time to start thinking about SCHOOL!  What?  I start back in less than four weeks!  Our first day back is July 29th, and the kids come back on August 5th!  It will be here before I know it, and I have so much to do!  Buying supplies for four kids, buying supplies for my classroom, going to IKEA for book boxes and shelving, plus spending more money on TPT.  :-)  It's hard to believe that July is here, and the summer is halfway done.

I'm linking up with Farley at Oh Boy Fourth Grade with my Currently for July!

Listening - The game has had its ups and downs just since I typed this!  There's peace right now.  I make no promises for the next two minutes.

Loving - I've tried this summer to have at least an hour every day where we turn off the tablets, the TV, the Wii, and the computer and entertain ourselves the "old fashioned way."  Some days have gone better than others.

Thinking and Needing - See above.  :-)  I still can't believe how fast the summer has gone.

Wanting - Summer in Georgia has been HOT.  We went to the pool yesterday, and even in the water it was uncomfortable.  Hopefully, it will cool down soon, though I doubt it.  August is usually hotter than July.

4th plans - While I'd love to stay inside in the A/C, we've decided to go to a 4th festival near us.  It's supposed to cool down a little (from mid 90's to upper 80's), so I'm hoping we enjoy ourselves.

Get Fit Friday - My Favorite Recipe Website

Loss this week: 2 lbs
Total Loss: 4.5 lbs

This week, I'm linking up with Bunting, Books, and Bright Ideas with Christina's "Getting Fit Friday".  Head on over there and get some great ideas for getting fit this summer!

I am seeing some definite momentum!!  My goal this summer had been 1 pound a week, and the last two weeks I've surpassed that goal!  I think that tracking on the weekends, plus exercising four times a week is really working.

I want to tell you about my favorite website for recipes.  Seriously, this past week, I think I made all of our dinners but one from this site.  Skinnytaste was created about 6 years ago with recipes that are low fat, yet still delicious.  Plus, they use tons of fresh ingredients and no "Franken-food."  So you won't see any recipes with fat free Cool Whip or Sugar Free Jello.  As someone who is trying to get the processed food out of our house and eat cleaner, this site has been a God-send!  When I'm planning my meals on Fridays for the next week, this is the place I go.  Here are some of our favorites:

Baked Chicken Parmesan:  This tastes almost exactly like the full fat variety.  It was so good, plus every single child in my house cleaned their plate.  When that happens, you know you have a winner!

Lemon Feta Chicken:  I made this one as directed with drumsticks, but next time, I think I'm going to use boneless, skinless chicken breasts.  First, because I think the feta will stay on better, and second, because taking the skin off of the drumsticks is an incredibly messy job.  Either way, it was a hit too!

Baked Oatmeal with Blueberries and Bananas:  I made this for dinner this week.  There weren't any blueberries when I was grocery shopping (criminal, right?), so I used some frozen strawberries.  Still fabulous.  My two youngest scarfed it up.

So, if you're in a rut looking for fresh, low-fat ideas for dinner that still taste delicious, this is the website for you!  She's also got a cookbook coming out in the fall.  (Mine's already pre-purchased at Amazon.)

See you next Friday.  Next week, I'm talking about how to stay on track while on vacation!  Eek!

Get Fit Friday! - Weekends

Loss This Week - 1.5 lbs*
Total Loss - 2.5 lbs

* I think I need a new scale.  When I stepped on it this morning, it said I hadn't loss anything.  Then, I tried again after lunch for curiosity's sake, and I'd gained 2 1/2 pounds.  A couple of hours later, I'd gone down 4 pounds from lunch.  I've been on it a couple of more times just to see what would pop up, and it's stayed pretty consistent, so I'm going with that number.  I feel like I'm on The Biggest Loser with the scale numbers popping back and forth.  :)

On to your regularly scheduled programming:

Am I the only one who struggles with weekends?  During the school year, I spend so much time making sure I'm eating right and tracking while still doing everything else, that on weekends, I just want to relax and not think about it.  Unfortunately, I think that it's really sabotaging my weight loss.  So this past weekend, I decided I was still going to track over the weekend.  I was going to be more relaxed about what I ate, but I was going to keep track of everything I ate.  I discovered that just keeping track helped me not eat mindlessly.  I still didn't eat perfectly, but I was more mindful of my choices.  I went over my allotted points both days, but not by much.  Weight Watchers gives you extra points for the week, so I didn't feel as guilty.  I even found a great recipe for a light Fettuccine Alfredo that was made with milk, chicken broth, and Parmesan cheese.  Delicious.  I'm trying to eat pretty clean too, so I'm staying away from fat-free or fake foods.

As I planned out my meals for the next week, I'm also being more mindful of what I'm serving on the weekends.  That's our time to eat those comfort foods (think cheeseburgers and hot dogs), but I'm trying to make sure we've got some good for you stuff in there too!  I seemed to work last week, and we'll see how this week goes!

Monday Meet Up!

I'm linking up the The Teaching Tribune's Summer Bloggin' Linky Party!  Last week, was all about introducing a buddy.  I didn't get it up last Monday, so I wanted to introduce you to my buddy today!

This is Jean!  She's an Aussie blogger.  (I've always wanted to visit Australia)  She blogs at The Teacher Gene, and she's just started, so head over there and give her some love!  She's also on TPT, and she has some fabulous products!!

This week, we were supposed to share about us, so here goes!

I'm starting my 16th year teaching next August.  Boy, that sounds like a really long time.  I should be pretty good at this by now.  ;-)  Next year will be my 9th year in second grade.  I absolutely love teaching second grade.  They're old enough to "get" the whole school thing, but they're still pretty innocent.  Seven is such a fun age to be!  I got my masters degree three years ago, and last summer, I finished up my ESOL endorsement.  Last school year, I had all of the second grade ESOL students in my class.  All 20 of them.  It was one of my hardest years ever teaching, but they were probably my most favorite group ever.  They were so sweet and so hard working, and they made SO much progress.  Seriously, I was almost in tears reading with them at the end of the year because they had gotten so much better.  I'm missing them.

My favorite TV genre is probably crime shows.  I've watched every episode of CSI ever made (even the really bad Laurence Fishburne ones).  I also used to watch Criminal Minds until it got WAY too freaky for me.  Probably not a good thing since my husband works nights.

Since summer started, I've done some serious reading.  I've read biographies of Queen Victoria, Catherine the Great, and Elizabeth of York (Henry VIII's mother).  I've also read The Lady in the Tower about Anne Boelyn, and I'm working my way through a biography about Queen Anne, the last Stuart monarch.  I love to read, and I hate that I can't get enough time for it during the school year.

In my free time, I volunteer for a great organization for moms called The Mommies Network!  They have online chapters in almost every state.  The great thing about it is that TMN has online forums, and local chapters where you can meet other moms face to face.  I've been a member since 2007, and have met some fabulous friends!

Head on over to The Teaching Tribune to meet other great bloggers!!

Getting Fit - Exercise

Loss for the Week: 1 lb
Total Loss: 1 lb

It's "Get Fit Friday Sunday!"  (Hey, it's summer.  I'm having a hard time remembering what day it is.)  I'm talking about exercise today.  I'll be honest.  Finding time to exercise (and actually exercising) is something that I continually struggled with.  A few years ago, I joined a gym, and I really enjoyed the classes and watching TV while I walked on the treadmill, but once my youngest was born, it was almost impossible to find time to go after school, between working, nursing, grading, and keeping up with three older boys.  So, I ended up donating my fee to the gym for almost a year.  I would do really well in the summer going to the gym, but once school started, it was back to missing more than I went.  I got tired of wasting the $40 a month, and cancelled my membership.  I still miss the classes, but I know that I wouldn't get there as much as I should.  Maybe when my kids are older, and I don't need to be home as early I can go back.

I decided that since it was so hard to go out to exercise, I'd find something that I could do in my house.  I got Jillian Michaels's 30 Day Shred, but I never made it much past the first phase.  I was trying to get up in the morning before work, but I am not a morning person.  If you're interested, I have a barely used DVD for sale.  ;-)  Then, I got the Wii Fitness Coach, but again, it was just hard to get up in the morning to actually do it.  I wanted to exercise in the morning when the house is quiet, plus, with four kids, actually getting the TV for a half hour or so to play an exercise DVD is close to impossible.

So, I gave up for a while, but I need to exercise in order to lose weight.  It doesn't matter how much I restrict my calorie intake, if I don't exercise to boost my metabolism, I don't lose.  I knew that this summer I needed something I could actually stick with.  Here's my plan:

Morning:  I have the free 7 minute workout app on my phone.  I downloaded it during the school year, and it's something I can actually do in the morning.  Seven minutes is easy, plus it doesn't require any special equipment or clothes.  I try and do it five mornings a week.

Evening:  It's summer in Georgia, which means it's hot and humid.  That means that you can't go out and exercise at all during the day.  I walk at night (around 7 pm).  Supper is done and cleaned up, but it's light enough outside.  One trip around my neighborhood is about 3/4 of a mile, and I I do two trips.  My neighborhood also has some killer hills, so my thighs get quite the workout.  Twice around is a 30 minute walk.

Before Bed: 15 pushups and 15 situps  (Having four kids has killed my abs, so I need to get in as many situps as I can.)

That's my plan!  Free, and easy to do even when school starts back.  Hope it encourages you!

June Currently!

I have never done a "Currently", so I'm pretty excited about this!  I'm linking up with Farley from Oh Boy Fourth Grade with this month's Currently.  So, here goes!

Since the kids are in bed, it's my turn to get the television, so I'm watching Rachel Maddow.  Love how smart she is.  (And how excited she gets about geeky stuff.)

The weather has cooled off here in Georgia, so I'm able to have the windows open today!  Unfortunately, June will return tomorrow with its tropical moisture, and we'll be back to A/C and sweating.

I go back to work 8 weeks from tomorrow!  Crazy, right?  So, I'm already starting to think about my themes for next year and what I need to do to get prepared.

My ten year old is off to Boy Scout Camp this week!  It's his first time away from home for this long, and I'm pretty nervous.  We haven't gotten a phone call yet to come and get him, so I'm thinking he's probably having a good time.  He'll be home on Saturday, and it can't come soon enough.  My twelve year old leaves Sunday for the same camp (they're in different troops).  He went last year and had a great time, so I won't worry quite as much about him.  :-)

I was able to get out and walk around the neighborhood for a half hour, but now I need some water.  I'm too lazy to get up off of the couch, though.

I've decided that this summer is the year I finally get my house organized.  We're thinking about moving next summer, and we all know how busy the school year is, so if it doesn't happen this summer, my house will never get organized.  I'm also trying to lose 15 to 20 pounds.  Hence the walking today.  Hoping that next fall, I'll go back to school at least two sizes smaller!

Resuscitating the Blog (And a New Feature!)

Yeah, so it's been a few weeks almost six months since I last posted.  I'm trying to slowly figure out how to fit this blogging thing into my life, so there might be some fits and starts before I get it all worked out.

I've decided that one way to ensure that I'm posting more frequently (and not stuff that's dreadfully boring) is to do at least one weekly feature.  So, I'm going to start with "Get Fit Friday!"  Yes, I worked for hours on that name.  ;-)

I've been wanting to lose some weight and start exercising for the longest time, but I've never found anything that worked out for me and my schedule.  I'm working on a plan this summer that I think is something that I can start in the summer and continue throughout the year when things get completely crazy.  And, it won't cost you a dime!!  (Full disclosure: I am using Weight Watchers which costs money, but there are free alternatives as well.)

So, follow along this summer as I take you on my trip to getting fit!!

My Introduction to Dropbox!

One of my favorite non-teaching bloggers is Rachel Held Evans.  Her way with words is something that I envy (a lot), and most of her posts will make you either laugh or cry.  This post did both.  She is in the middle of writing a book and proceeded to spill a chai latte all over her computer.  She spent a long couple of days wondering if her entire manuscript was lost.  I cannot encourage you enough to read the post.  It really is excellent writing.

Now, I'm not writing a book.  (Definitely not!)  But, I do have LOTS of files on my computer that I would hate to lose.  While I do try to back up the ones on my school laptop on the server at school, that's not always possible.  And my school laptop is almost six years old, which is almost elderly when you're talking about technology.  As a result, it dies.  A lot.  And when it dies, it needs to be re-imaged, which means I get it back just like it came to me the first time.  Every single file that is saved on my C Drive is gone.  So my constant fear is that it will die during a long break like Christmas or Summer.  Then, everything I've worked on for school would be gone.  Kaput.  Lost in the netherworld forever.

As a result, I've thought about how to save my work so it's not lost forever in a disaster of fire, flood, or pestilence.  And I've found Dropbox!  I know this site may be familiar to most of you, but it's all new to me, and I think I'm in love!  It was so easy to install and add files to.  I have Chrome as my browser, so it's easy to get to Google Docs, but it's harder to upload files to that.  I'm probably going to save my stuff to both, because I don't want to lose anything.

If you don't have a quick and easy way to save all of those great activities you've been creating for your classroom, I would definitely recommend Dropbox!

And, I can't leave you without a picture.  This was our day today.  While we didn't have snow, we did have single digit temperatures which only happens every couple of decades here in metro Atlanta, so schools were closed.  This is my two oldest playing on their Kindles with the new apps they were able to buy with the Amazon gift cards their aunt gave them.  It made for a quiet afternoon.  I think, however, that we're all ready to get back to our regular routine.  If only I could get school to start every day at 10:00 am. . .

Shepherds and Centers

What a weekend!  We had our Christmas Program at church today.  I got to spend time with a very cute shepherd.  :)

I had to help corral 30 of his fellow shepherds as well.  It was definitely interesting.  They did a great job though!!

I've finally finished my Winter Literacy Centers!  We've been using them this month, and I've been creating one or two a week for my students to use.  (Having them use them also means that I was able to work out some of the kinks.)  They cover the 2nd grade Common Core Standards, but they could be used for advanced first graders or for remediation in the upper grades.  I use them during my Daily 5 Word Work time twice a week.  It's a great way to review the grammar standards that there never seems to be enough time to practice.  They've been uploaded here in my TPT store!  (You can also click on the picture to go to my store.)

I hope everyone has a great week!  We only have five school days left before Winter Break!

Five for Friday. And a Freebie!!

It's the end of another week, and I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching with my Five for Friday!  We've had a busy week.  We started on Monday with our Elf arriving.  The kids named her "Jessie".  One of the choices was "Sparkles", and I was hoping that would win the vote, but luck wasn't with me.  So far, Jessie has brought the kids pencils and chocolate bells.

(Am I the only one who thinks the elf has really creepy eyes.  She's always staring at me!)

Here's a really cute video we watched together.  They loved it!

On Monday, we also made Hot Chocolate.  I made it, and the students wrote down the steps.  Then, we talked about using transition words in a how-to paragraph.  Finally we wrote the final copy of a paragraph.  We'll finish out the week by making this Hot Chocolate Craftivity that I got from Third Grade Bookworm.

Here's the recipe I used:

Creamy Hot Chocolate - serves 24
Adapted from www.mrshappyhomemaker.com

1/2 gallon milk (I used 2%, but whole milk would be divine!)
2 quarts half & half
14 oz can sweetened condensed milk
12 oz bag chocolate chips (semi sweet or milk chocolate)
Mini marshmallows

Add first four ingredients to slow cooker.  Stir to combine completely.  Cook on low for 2 - 3 hours or until hot.  Serve with mini marshmallows.

Here's a picture.  The pic isn't great, but the hot chocolate was delicious!

Wednesday, I had someone from our county's ESOL office visit my classroom for the whole day.  She was also my instructor last year when I was getting my certification, so she is a wonderful resource!  It was so nice to have another person in my class.  I could really get used to it!  She also had some suggestions of ways I can help my ELs become more comfortable with academic language.  Plus, she's fluent in Spanish (which I am most definitely NOT), so my Spanish speaking students loved it!

And, finally, we've been stuck inside almost the whole week with rain.  While it's been in the 70's here in Georgia (and I know that's not the case for much of the country), no recess the week after Thanksgiving Break makes for stir crazy children (and teachers).  Here's hoping that next week will be sunny and beautiful!!

If you'd like to use the unit, it's free in my TpT store!  Just click on the pictures to go download it.

Enjoy Friday!  I've only got two more until it's Winter Break!!

Surviving Halloween!

Personally, I think that Halloween (and the day after) should be national holidays, so we don't have to go to school, but since no one's taken my suggestion, I had to figure out how to make it through the day with some very excited second graders.

I decided the best way to do it would be to cut and paste.  This is from Jen Ross's Spidey Literacy Pack.  We've been talking about spiders all week, so I thought making spiders would be a great way to spend our mornings.  We made quite a mess.

But the spiders turned out very cute!!

Pay no attention to the Hispanic Heritage paragraphs that are still up.  We haven't gotten any new writing up this month.

But, I got to go home to these happy trick or treaters!

For some reason, Little Miss doesn't ever want to get her picture taken.  She was supposed to be a farmer girl with freckles.  It didn't work out perfectly.  She did come home with a huge haul of candy.  Guess everyone loves a two year old trick or treating.

How did you survive today?  And how are you going to handle tomorrow when they're in their sugar induced comas?  :)

My Truth Monday - Creepy!!

It's another My Truth Monday, and I'm linking up with Denise at Sunny Days to share my truth about what creeps me out.  (Perfect for Halloween, don't you think?)

Here's mine!

So, what's your truth about what creeps you out??  Besides Halloween week with little kids, that is.  ;-)

My Truth Monday - Fitness

I'm linking up with Denise at Sunny Days in Second Grade for her series on sharing our true feelings about various topics.  Today's is especially relevant to me, because I went jean shopping yesterday.  (Insert groan here.)  I hate shopping for clothes.  Don't get me wrong, I love clothes.  I love looking nice.  I love having a full closet with lots of choices.  But, I hate shopping.  I hate having to search through racks and racks to find the one thing that fits me.  I hate trying on four pairs of pants of various styles and not having anything that fits.  And I REALLY hate being so short.  When I do find something that fits, it's usually about 6 inches too long.  Can I get an "Amen" from the vertically challenged?  I guess everything clothing designer in the world thinks that all women who are petite are also a size 0 with no hips.  Well, I've had four children, so I definitely have some hips.  :-)  So, I decided that it was time to start getting fit again.  I spent today tracking all of my food, AND I got up early enough to exercise!  Trust me, that was quite the sacrifice since there's a two year old who lives at my house who can sometimes be up in the night.  (Like last night.)

So, here's my truth:

My goal is to lose 40 pounds by the end of the year (which will also be my 40th birthday).  Hopefully, by the summer time, I'll feel a lot more fit!

So, what's your truth about fitness??

So Much To Do!

And so little time!  Isn't that always the story of a teacher's life?  :)  I feel like the last month has flown by, and I haven't been able to get ahead anywhere.  We had conferences, then the end of the grading period, and finally report cards.  Now, it's getting ready for Halloween, then Thanksgiving, and finally Christmas.  Before I can turn around, it'll be the New Year.

So, my goal for the rest of the month is to stay ahead of things, post here regularly, and maybe even get some Thanksgiving activities up on TPT!  (OK, let's not get too crazy.  :) )

Hope everyone has a wonderful week!

Replenishing the Fun Circuits

Today is Wednesday.  Hump day.  That day in the week when Friday seems so close, yet so far away.  I'm exhausted from the first two days of the week, yet I know the next days will be even busier (because second graders can sense an upcoming weekend even better than a teacher).  Last week was an especially hard week.  Why is it that four day weeks seem longer than a five day week?  Plus, I had two parent conferences.  One where I was the teacher, and one where I was the parent.  And, I had my crier.  I was TIRED by the end of the week.

And, then I came across this article.  This was written by Nelba Marquez-Greene.  If that name sounds familiar to you, you probably saw her daughter's beautiful face on the news last December.  Ana Grace was killed by Adam Lanza last December at Sandy Hook.  She wrote a wonderful article on Edweek.org as a parent's letter to teachers.  Her letter is a touching reminder about why I go to school every day and spend these long and sometimes exhausting days with my students.  Because they NEED me.  And, honestly, I need them.  I need to see the joy in their eyes.  I need to hear their funny stories and laugh at their corny jokes.  If I had to work in an office, I'd probably shrivel up and waste away.

So, on a day when I'm tired and worn out, I'm going to remember these words.  Hopefully, they'll encourage you as we finish out this week.

"As you begin this school year, remember Ana Grace. Walk with courage, with faith, and with love. And don’t let them suck your fun circuits dry."

Let's always remember to replenish our fun circuits.

Spelling and Phonics for English Learners

Exciting title, right?  But, if you're like me, you probably have students in your room who are really poor spellers.  My class is made up almost entirely of English Learners, so they naturally struggle with spelling and phonics.  I started the year using the word study book provided by our district, but it only took two weeks for me to discover that it wasn't the best fit for my students.  I got my hands on a copy of Words Their Way, a book I had been introduced to a couple of years ago and read most of it in one weekend.  While I understood the premise of the book, with  24 students and only one of me, I wasn't sure how I was going to fit in time to meet with my five reading groups and an unknown number of spelling groups.  I didn't know what my next step was going to be.

So, I did what every person in the Western world does when they have a question.  I Googled!  (Seriously, what did we do before Google?)  I searched for "words their way for second grade", and this post from Second Story Window came up first!  What a life saver!  It describes how to use "chunk spelling" to help students generalize spelling patterns and use them in their everyday writing.  Every week, the students work with a different chunk.  We started with the -at family.  On the blog page, there's a link to a Beginning Sound Board the students use to make words.  We did this on Friday.  (And I forgot to take pics.  Darn.)  It was fabulous to watch my kids.  My higher kids were able to put the words together mentally, while my lower readers were having an extended practice time in sounding out words.  (Something they really struggle with.)  Then, we tried to create some big words.  While that didn't work as well as I hoped, I think we'll get better as we go on.  (I was trying to come up with big words with -at in them, and all I could come up with was catastrophe.)  I let the students pick the ten words for their lists, and I was so impressed with how good their choices were.  The students who were my better spellers chose the more difficult words, and my weaker spellers chose the easier words.  I'm hoping that when we test on Friday, I'll see a lot of improvement!

I'm also going to start doing some making words lessons from Pat Cunningham this week.  On Tuesdays and Thursdays, I'll have my students plus about five other EL students in my class for 45 minutes along with our lead ESOL teacher.  I've been debating what to do with those students, since it's during my writing time, and I think this is the best plan.  While the other students are there, we'll do about 20 minutes of writing and then another 20 minutes of word study.  On Tuesdays, we'll do a making words lesson, and then, hopefully, on Thursdays, we'll be able to do a Rounding Up the Rhymes lesson or a Guess the Covered Word lesson.

I'm excited about my new plan!  While I'm sure it will need some tweaking, I can't wait to see how my students improve this year!  I'll be sure to let you know how it goes!
